NPP Likely To Call For Early Congress As Alan-Bawumia Race Intensifies – Insider Report

The ruling New Patriotic Party may likely call for an early congress to elect a new flagbearer who will lead the Party after President Akufo-Addo.

The Party’s congress which was scheduled for somewhere in 2023 is most likely to be pushed forward to middle of 2022, credible sources close to the Party have revealed to this portal.

According to an official of the Party, who pleaded anonymity, the Council of Elders of the Party are growing increasingly worried as unofficial campaigning and lobbying for the position of flagbearer Intensifies.

The Elders are particularly worried about the growing activities of the Alan and Bawumia factions, which they believe, can negatively impact the Party especially as the Party has just began it’s second term in office.

Our source tells us that the Council of Elders have received about six different petitions calling for an early congress.

The common belief of these petitioners is that the early congress will afford the party an opportunity to identify and resolve any issues that may arise out of the election of flagbearer.

This, the petitioners believe, will also enable the Party to have a united front to face the NDC squarely in the 2024 election as the NPP seeks to break the 8.

Factions loyal to Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen have emerged in style after the Supreme Court affirmed President Akufo-Addo’s victory in the 2020 election.

While many have said that the Vice President has demonstrated enough competence to merit the flagbearership of the Party, others have also made the case that Alan Kyerematen is the next in line to lead the Party considering the fact that he was second to President Akufo-Addo in the past 3 contests.
