Former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has alleged that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government is behind a covert fake news operation aimed at damaging his reputation. Mahama made this claim on Tuesday, November 3, during a visit to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as part of his campaign tour in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking at the meeting, Mahama accused the NPP of deliberately spreading misinformation to undermine his credibility ahead of the 2024 general elections. He specifically addressed reports suggesting that he was involved in orchestrating an attack on his convoy in Techiman, describing the allegations as unfounded and malicious.
“The seat of government knows about the recent propagation of fake news,” Mahama stated. “Because their campaign has failed, they have resorted to lying and propagating fake news. But I know God knows everyone’s heart, and just as He enstools kings, He will have mercy on us and enstool His king.”
Mahama called on Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to disregard such claims, emphasizing that they are intended to sow discord. He reiterated his commitment to peaceful and issue-based campaigning, urging all political actors to prioritize unity and the national interest over divisive rhetoric.
The former president also expressed his desire for credible and transparent elections, noting that unity among Ghanaians should supersede political ambitions. “We must focus on conducting ourselves in a manner that strengthens our democracy. I am committed to a peaceful campaign that fosters national cohesion and development,” he added.
Mahama’s allegations come at a critical time as the political climate in Ghana intensifies ahead of the 2024 elections. Observers have noted increasing tensions between the NDC and the NPP, with both sides trading accusations of foul play.
The NPP is yet to respond to Mahama’s claims.
