Help Me To Solve Ghana’s Economic Challenges – Mahama Appeals To Otumfuo

In his address, Mahama highlighted the gravity of Ghana’s current economic situation, characterized by high inflation, macroeconomic instability, a depreciating currency, and a debt default that has restricted access to international credit markets. He described the crisis as one of the most daunting economic challenges in the country’s history, surpassing those faced during his tenure as President from 2013 to 2017.

President John Dramani Mahama has called on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to leverage his influence and diplomacy in addressing the country’s ongoing economic challenges. Speaking at the Manhyia Palace during the first Akwasidae celebration of the year on January 19, President Mahama expressed gratitude for the Asantehene’s past support and reiterated his commitment to advancing development in the Ashanti Region.

“Our nation Ghana is facing a dire economic crisis. While this is not the first time we have been in such a situation, this particular crisis is unprecedented in its scale and complexity,” Mahama stated.

He recounted how the Asantehene’s guidance and influence were instrumental in fostering economic growth and overcoming obstacles during his first administration.

“Your Royal Majesty, I had the privilege of calling on you to smoothen the path toward economic stability and growth. Each time I called on you, you didn’t hesitate to assist. I am grateful for the cooperation and support I enjoyed during my presidency,” Mahama said.

Looking ahead, Mahama pledged to complete stalled and abandoned infrastructure projects in the Ashanti Region, particularly in the healthcare sector. He emphasized his commitment to fulfilling promises that would enhance development in the region and across the country.

On his part, the Asantehene, speaking through the Paramount Chief of Mampong Traditional Area, Dasebre Osei Bonsu II, urged President Mahama to honor the promises made to Ghanaians, particularly those affecting the Asante Kingdom.

“We implore you to always remember the undertakings and promises you have made. The people of this great kingdom trust that you will fulfill them,” the Asantehene said.

The Asantehene further expressed confidence in Mahama’s ability to deliver on his commitments and urged him to prioritize ongoing developmental projects within the kingdom and across other regions.

The meeting underscored the importance of collaboration between traditional leadership and political figures in tackling Ghana’s economic challenges and promoting sustainable development.
