NPP General Secretary Has No Locus To Shut Me Up – Adwoa Safo

“He was on the radio himself, speaking publicly about party matters, even blaming others for the election loss. Now, when it’s my turn to speak, a statement is issued to silence me. What gives him the right to do that?” she asked. “If he has an issue with me, he should address it privately, not through vague public statements.”

Sarah Adwoa Safo, former Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, has openly criticized the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), asserting that he lacks the authority to silence her or any other party member. Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse program, Safo emphasized that freedom of speech is a fundamental constitutional right guaranteed to all Ghanaians. Her remarks came in response to a directive from the NPP General Secretary urging party supporters to refrain from discussing internal party matters in the media.

Safo argued that every individual, including herself, has the right to express their views freely. She referenced the General Secretary’s recent public statements, particularly his criticism of former President Akufo-Addo, where he claimed the president ignored the party’s advice during cabinet meetings. Safo questioned the General Secretary’s moral authority to issue public directives while engaging in similar conduct himself.

“He was on the radio himself, speaking publicly about party matters, even blaming others for the election loss. Now, when it’s my turn to speak, a statement is issued to silence me. What gives him the right to do that?” she asked. “If he has an issue with me, he should address it privately, not through vague public statements.”

Safo also highlighted the growing discontent among the party’s grassroots members, urging the General Secretary to pay attention to their grievances. “He should go on social media and see how party members are criticizing him. There’s an election coming up, and he shouldn’t allow himself to be used for other people’s agendas. If the base feels unheard, they will look for someone to speak for them,” she stated.

The former MP further addressed the personal attacks she has endured within the party, describing them as a form of character assassination. She expressed her determination to set the record straight and defend her reputation. “I have been unfairly defamed by my own party. I owe it to myself to clarify the issues and ensure the truth is known. The narrative they’ve created about me is false, and I will not let it stand,” she asserted.

Safo reiterated her commitment to upholding the principles of free speech, stressing that no one should be silenced for expressing their opinions. “Freedom of speech is a constitutional right, and no one should be intimidated into silence. We are all in the party to build it, and no individual has the right to force others out or shut them up,” she concluded.
