The Nigerian youths who thronged the Ukraine Embassy to volunteer to fight the Russian invasion have allegedly been asked to pay $1000 each.
According to a Lagos-based journalist, the money is to finance the volunteers’ flight tickets and visas to the war-torn European country.
Mohammed, however, noted on Joy FM’s Ghana Connect that the over 200 young and abled Nigerians have been duly registered.
“According to the Deputy Consular Officer, they are being charged for the fact that there is no direct flight to Ukraine because the air space is closed.
“So they [volunteers] have to go through neighbouring countries like Romania, Poland and because these are European countries, they have to pay for flights and visas,” he told Evans Mensah on Friday.
After Russia invaded Ukraine on Thursday, February 24, the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, urged people worldwide to join the fight.
Subsequently, hundreds of young men besieged the Ukraine Embassy in Abuja, also put down their names in a register provided by the embassy.
