NHIS Was Started By My Father, Not Kufuor – Zanetor Rawlings Reveals

Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey, has expressed dissatisfaction with her party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), for not adequately defending and promoting the policies they initiated. In an interview on GHOne TV on June 27, 2024, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings criticized the party for remaining quiet while successive New Patriotic Party (NPP) administrations, including that of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, take credit for projects started by NDC governments.

Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings highlighted the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) as a key example. She asserted that the NHIS, often attributed to the NPP, was actually initiated by the NDC during the tenure of her father, the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, and piloted in some parts of the country.

“The NHIS that people keep attributing to the NPP was actually a brainchild of the NDC. It was actually piloted during the PNDC era. That is why I said perhaps as the NDC, we are not marketing ourselves well enough and speaking about what we have achieved well enough,” she stated.

Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings also emphasized the NDC’s role in the expansion of electricity in Ghana, noting that significant progress in this sector occurred during the transition from the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) to the NDC era.

“A lot of the projects that the NPP has commissioned were actually started by the NDC, a lot of contracts that we have seen coming into fruition under the NPP were actually originally signed under the NDC,” she added.

The MP’s comments come at a time of heightened political discourse as both major parties prepare for upcoming elections. Her remarks highlight ongoing tensions between the NDC and NPP regarding the recognition and attribution of developmental projects in Ghana.
