On Thursday, December 5, at approximately 12:45 p.m., Ghana Immigration officers stationed at Hevi, an unapproved route in the Akatsi North District, intercepted three booklets of dummy ballot papers. Each booklet contained 1,000 ballots, totaling 3,000 dummy ballots. The interception occurred during a routine monitoring exercise in the Ave Havi enclave, en route to Vodome in neighboring Togo.

The suspect, Abraham Ahiabu, identified as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Constituency Secretary for Akatsi North, was detained at the scene. During initial questioning, Ahiabu claimed he was transporting the dummy ballots to Vodome for voter education purposes ahead of Ghana’s elections. However, the circumstances of the interception have raised significant concerns.

Further interrogation revealed that Ahiabu allegedly had an additional 20,000 dummy ballot booklets in his possession. The choice of an unapproved route, often associated with irregular cross-border activities, has led to heightened suspicions about the true intent behind the transportation of these materials. This incident has sparked public debate, with many questioning why voter education in Togo would require Ghanaian dummy ballots, particularly given the proximity of Ghana’s elections.

Authorities have voiced concerns over potential attempts to compromise the integrity of the electoral process. Allegations have emerged suggesting the possibility of using dummy ballots to facilitate foreign voter participation in Ghana’s elections, though no concrete evidence has been provided to support these claims at this stage.

Ahiabu has since been handed over to the Ghana Police at the Akatsi North District for further investigation. The seized dummy ballot booklets have been transferred to the Akatsi North District Electoral Commission for verification of their authenticity. Officials are conducting a thorough inquiry into the matter to safeguard the credibility of Ghana’s electoral system.
