The National Identification Authority (NIA) will resume its registration excercise in the Eastern Region. The Registration period will span from 18th – 27th June.
According to a statement by the NIA, issuance of the Ghana Card started on 10th of June at 5,636 registration centres.
Nearly 800,000 have received their cards since the excercise begun.
There will also be a nationwide mop-up excercise between 18th June to 4th September, 2020, to register those who missed the first registration window.
The Authority and the Electoral Commission have come under criticisms in recent times since a legislative instrument was laid before parliament which empowers the EC to recognise only the Ghana Card and the Ghana Passport as the requirements for registration of the new voter register.
The main opposition party claims such a move would disenfranchise majority of Ghanaians.
Others also link the need for the Ghana Card to be ready, with the easing of COVID-19 social restrictions.
Ghana has been experiencing deaths and rising case counts since restrictions were eased.
The NIA is targeting 16. 7 million Ghanaians to register.
