In a resolute stance against corruption, John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged that his administration will collaborate with relevant authorities and international partners to recover monies and properties acquired through corrupt means. Mahama made this commitment during a live broadcast themed ‘Mahama Conversations,’ as part of his campaign for the upcoming December 7 general elections.
The former president expressed deep concern over the increasing cases of corruption and the blatant disregard for fiscal discipline under the current Akufo-Addo-led administration. He highlighted the urgent need for accountability and promised that, if elected, his government would ensure that all illicitly acquired funds are returned to the state.
Citing the controversial case of former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah, who had over $1 million stolen from her Abelemkpe residence by domestic staff, Mahama underscored the pervasive nature of corruption. He questioned the ethical standards of the current administration, pointing out the lavish lifestyles of officials and their families, including the use of private jets at $20,000 per hour.
“Notwithstanding all these socio-economic difficulties, the young people continue to observe the opulence of the [New Patriotic Party] administration’s officials and their families chartering private jets at $20,000 per hour for trips that our own Falcon Executive Jet could have done,” Mahama remarked. He further criticized the justification given by the Minister for Defence, who claimed the Falcon Executive Jet was unsuitable for presidential travel due to the absence of a shower.
Mahama expressed empathy for the frustration felt by Ghana’s youth, who witness such excesses amid widespread economic challenges. He vowed to take decisive action to combat corruption, emphasizing his commitment to working with both local and international anti-corruption bodies to reclaim unlawfully acquired wealth.
“But I say to the good people of Ghana that, working with Ghanaians and international anti-corruption partners, we shall do all that is humanly possible to retrieve such wrongly acquired wealth,” .

This pledge, according to Mr. Mahama forms a critical part of Mahama’s broader agenda to restore integrity and accountability in governance. As the election approaches, Mr. Mahama believes his anti-corruption stance is shared by many Ghanaians who are disillusioned by the current administration’s handling of public funds.
