Most Parliamentarians Are Poor – Ken Agyapong Reveals Why

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has alleged that majority of Ghana’s parliamentarians are poor, contrary to widespread perceptions that they are swimming in wealth and luxury.

According to him, many of his colleagues depend solely on their remuneration as an MP, with no other extra source of income to support themselves and their constituents.

The controversial MP also claimed that most MP’s because of car loans which they are still servicing, have their salaries reduced to peanuts.

According to Mr Agyapong, he is one of the highest paid MP’s because he has not taken any car loans, except when he first entered parliament, a loan which he has since repaid in full. He explained that even with the fact that he is one of the highest paid, his salary is not enough to pay the “chop money” of his two wives.

“I receive GHC11,000…[But] I pay chop money of GHC20,000 to each of my two wives so if I am being paid an amount of GHC 11,000, how would I’ve lived on this amount of money? If I did not have investments I would have broken down by now. I take care of my constituents and even other constituents because I’ve invested and I’ve other businesses,” he noted.
