The management of Kotoka International Airport (KIA) has confirmed an incident that occurred on Sunday, September 22, when a passenger’s luggage began emitting smoke at the Terminal 3 Departure Hall. The incident happened around 3:27 p.m., prompting swift action from the airport’s security team.

The bag, located at the baggage wrap area, immediately caught the attention of the Operations Room of the Aviation Security Department. Following safety protocols, the security team quickly isolated the luggage and evacuated passengers from the terminal, in line with the Ghana Airports Company Limited’s (GACL) Emergency Operations procedures.

In a statement, KIA management disclosed that the passenger involved was handed over to the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) for further interrogation. The GACL also issued a reminder to all passengers regarding the dangers of traveling with batteries, which are prohibited under International Civil Aviation Regulations. Passengers found with such prohibited items will have their luggage confiscated and handed over to authorities for further action.

The GACL expressed its gratitude to passengers for their cooperation during the evacuation process, assuring the public that their safety remains a top priority. Normal operations at Terminal 3 have since resumed without further disruptions.
