Kotoka Airport Re-opens On September 1

Published

on

President Akufo Addo has announced the reopening of Ghana’s Kotoka International Airport from Tuesday September 1, 2020 after it was closed down due to Covid-19.

Addressing the nation in his 16th Coronavirus updates, he noted that all passengers who are flown into the country must possess proof of negative PCR test.

“In Update No.15, I announced the easing of restrictions in some areas of national life. I also indicated my hope that preparations and simulation exercises underway, including the installation of COVID-19 testing facilities at Kotoka International Airport, would give us a clear indication as to whether or not we could re-open the airport on 1st September. After weeks of thorough work, I am satisfied that it is safe to do so.

Fellow Ghanaians, I am glad to announce that Kotoka International Airport will reopen and resume operations from Tuesday, 1st September 2020. This decision has been communicated to international airlines.

It has been well-established that the very first cases of COVID-19 in Ghana were imported into our shores. We are determined to make sure this scenario does not recur. The commitment to ensuring that the gradual easing of restrictions, including the reopening of our airports, does not lead to the importation or resurgence of the virus into our country, is firmly in place. That is why the following measures have been taken and duly communicated to airlines wishing to resume flights to Ghana: any passenger arriving in Ghana must be in possession of a negative COVID-19 PCR test result from an accredited laboratory in the country of origin. The test should have been done not more than seventy-two (72) hours before the scheduled departure from the country of origin. All airlines have been instructed to ensure compliance with this directive for all passengers wishing to travel to Ghana, and those airlines who fail in this regard will be duly sanctioned; disembarking passengers must do so wearing face masks; upon disembarking from the aeroplane, each passenger will undergo a mandatory COVID-19 test at the airport terminal, at a fee to be borne by the passenger. The test result will be available within thirty (30) minutes; children under the ages of five (5) will not be required to undergo testing at the airport; passengers, who test positive for COVID-19, will be handled by the health authorities for further clinical assessment and management; and passengers, who test negative, can, thereupon, enter Ghana to go about their lawful activities, and will be advised to continue to observe COVID-19 safety precautions during their stay in Ghana.

The Ministries of Information, Health and Aviation, and their respective agencies – the Ghana Health Service, the Ghana Airports Co. Ltd., and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority – will spell out in further detail the protocols surrounding the re-opening of our international airport, and the procedures to be adhered to by passengers arriving in Ghana at the COVID-19 media briefing tomorrow, Monday, 31st August. For the avoidance of doubt, our borders, by land and sea, will continue to remain closed to human traffic until further notice”

Meanwhile the country’s land and sea borders remain closed.

I Am Not Resigning From Peace FM – Kwame Sefa Kayi Speaks Amid NDC-Sammy Gyamfi Brouhaha

Published

on

Veteran Journalist, and host of Peace FM’s Kokrokoo morning show, Kwame Sefa Kayi has reacted to rumors that he is resigning from the Station following the brouhaha involving the NDC.

Sefa Kayi was accused by the NDC’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi of being bias and a dictatorial host.

This was after the host had refused to accede to the NDC’s demands of barring their suspended former Central Regional Chairman, Bernard Allotey Jacobs from appearing on the show after the party accused the latter of persistent anti-party conduct.

Reports surfaced on Thursday, September 24, that the long-time host of Kokrokoo was resigning. The reports had claimed that the “Chairman General”, as he is popularly known by his listeners, was displeased by the decision of the station’s management to thrash out the boycott issues with Ghana’s biggest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

However, reacting to the rumours of his resignation on Friday, Sefa Kayi, who had been silent on the matter stated: “When you recognize you are working in a public space you don’t have to react to everything thrown at you.”

He explained that he knew he was never going to get a hundred percent approval rating and was therefore not bothered about the rumors of his alleged resignation.

Accra Is Choked, Change The National Capital – Economist

Published

Senior Economist, Office of the Senior Minister, Habibu Adam has suggested the capital city of the country is moved from Accra which is already choked and engulfed in filth.

According to him, if urgent attention is not given to the congestion in Accra, there will be too much human and motor traffic to an extent that the economic costs to the country would be dire.

“If care is not taken, in the next 10 years, Accra will need an interchange per kilometer to allow for free movement of vehicles. There will be too much human and motor traffic to an extent that the economic costs to the country would be dire.

“Already Accra has captured Kasoa from Central Region and tension is beginning to brew between Greater Accra and Eastern Region,” he told Ghana News Agency.

Western Togoland Attack Most Successful By Secessionist Group In West Africa – Kwesi Aning

Published

on

Security expert, Professor Kwesi Aning has labeled the Western Togoland attack in some parts of the Volta Region as the most successful in the West African Region.

According to him, the attack has exposed the weakness and failures of the country’s security system and it’s about time authorities in charge of security stepped up their intelligence.

“It has raised very disturbing questions and these are questions that should not be swept under the carpet. This is the most successful first attack by a secessionist group against a sovereign state in West Africa and in the Sahara. It is the most successful because we need to look at the geographical expanse of the attack. These are not small towns so where were the police, BNI and national security”.

“The second is the coordinated nature of those attacks. They all took place in a specific time frame and the failure of the state to see that trucks were brought in to dump sands at the roads to block them. People sang patriotic songs, set fire and danced. All without a response from the state”.

“The final symbolism around the success relates to the police stations. Two police stations representing the state overrun and totally defeated. The ten AK47 which were stolen is very symbolic. We don’t know if they took only ten”, he said on Newsfile.
