I’ll Announce My Running Mate After Meeting With NEC – Mahama

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said he will only name his running mate after a meeting with the Council of Elders and the National Executive Committee (NEC) of his party.

He addressed this concern in a Facebook live session on Thursday June 18, 2020.

“Our constitution states that I must announce my running mate in consultation with these two bodies.

“Unfortunately, because of the restriction on mass gathering, it was not possible for us to bring the members of our National Executive Committee from all over the country to implement that consultation,” he said.

He further stated, “now that the way has been cleared, you will be hearing the name of my running mate soon.”

A questioner during the interactive session suggested Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare as running mate to the former president.

Extolling the qualities of the legal luminary, Mr Mahama disclosed his love for the law professor and his opinion writings but indicated: “I don’t know if he wants to be a running mate.”

“I don’t know which party he belongs to. I don’t know what his political orientation is but it is not everybody who takes the plunge into politics. It can be a very difficult business and not everybody would want to get into politics,” he replied.

John Mahama has been partnered in previous elections by Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, who died suddenly on June 29, 2018 at the 37 Military Hospital.

The ruling New Patriotic Party have been claiming known members of the NDC are refusing to partner Mr Mahama for this year’s elections.
