President Akufo-Addo, after asking the current IGP, Mr James Oppong Boanuh to proceed on leave, has appointed 51-year-old George Akuffo Dampare as his replacement.
Mr Dampare’s appointment has received massive applause from Ghanaian social media users, especially among CSOs and governance experts.
Mr Dampare’s acceptance is mainly because he has distinguished himself in any position he has held in the Police Service and has also risen through the ranks from a constable to an IGP.
However, it is no doubt that if a poll was to be conducted among Ghanaians as to who should be the next IGP, majority will mention COP Nathan Kofi Boakye.
Over the years, Mr Kofi Boakye has earned quite a reputation as an effective and bullish Police Commander.
Known widely as an action man, and a man who is feared and respected at the same time, even among criminals, it begs asking why such a man is never considered for the top police job whenever there is a vacancy.
It is even more surprising why a man, who has proven himself to be more effective in the area of fighting crime, would be confined to some office and reduced to nothing but mere Red Tape.
But is there a reason why Kofi Boakye is always overlooked despite the aura of respect and competence that he carries?
Is his exclusion political?
Well, your guess is as good as mine?
