The Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) is in mourning following the passing of its flagbearer, Madam Akua Donkor, a prominent political figure and vocal advocate for the grassroots. Madam Donkor, aged 83, passed away on Monday, October 28, 2024, at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, formerly known as the Ridge Hospital.
The Vice Presidential candidate for the Ghana Freedom Party, Kwabena Agyeman Appiah Kubi, widely recognized as Roman Fada, confirmed her passing during an interview with Accra-based Onua TV. According to Roman Fada, Madam Donkor fell ill on Saturday and was initially treated at the Nsawam Government Hospital, where she received medical attention and was later discharged. Unfortunately, her condition worsened on Sunday, necessitating urgent admission to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, where she passed away at 10:00 p.m. on Monday.
Madam Akua Donkor was a notable figure in Ghanaian politics, renowned for her candidness and advocacy for the rural and underserved communities. Her political journey symbolized her commitment to inclusivity and provided a platform for voices often overlooked within the political landscape. Her passing is a significant loss to the GFP and to those who admired her bold approach to political engagement.
The Ghana Freedom Party is expected to release an official statement to formally announce her death and outline the party’s path forward in light of this tragic event. In the wake of Madam Donkor’s passing, Roman Fada has called on all political parties to ensure peaceful conduct in the upcoming 2024 elections.
He urged political leaders and supporters alike to honor Madam Donkor’s memory by promoting peace and unity. “Let’s use the death of our mother to remind ourselves that we are one people and that we should ensure that we vote peacefully and keep our country united,” Roman Fada said.
