The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is in talks with FIFA to introduce the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the local league, this has been disclosed by President Kurt E.S Okraku.

According to the GFA president, referees’ manager Alex Kotei is in direct talks with the world football governing body, exploring the possibility of using the technology in Ghana.

“We are going through the process of using the VAR in our leagues. Our referees’ manager Alex Kotei has been at the forefront dealing with FIFA and we are exploring the possibility of using the technology,” Kurt Okraku said in an engagement with GTV Sports Plus.

The Ghana FA president however noted, “But what is true also is that it’s too expensive.”

Since its introduction by FIFA, many Ghanaians who have not been impressed with referees in the local leagues have wondered when the technology will reach the country.

Last month, it was used for the first time at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium when Ghana held Nigeria to a goalless draw in the first leg of the playoff game in the qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Despite the ongoing talks between the GFA and FIFA, it is unclear when the VAR technology will be introduced in the local Ghanaian leagues.
