The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has commenced the nationwide Special Voting exercise today, allowing election officials, security personnel, and media practitioners to cast their ballots ahead of the December 7 general elections.
Initially scheduled at 328 designated centers across the country, the exercise in the Western and Eastern Regions has been postponed to Thursday, December 5, 2024, following the recall of ballots.
Key Details of the Special Voting
The Special Voting exercise accommodates 131,478 eligible voters, constituting 0.007% of Ghana’s total voter population of 18.7 million. Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the EC, assured the public of a smooth, transparent, and peaceful process during a press briefing last Friday. “We are ready to conduct credible elections and ensure every vote counts,” she affirmed.
Mrs. Mensa also clarified that security personnel and journalists who did not apply for Special Voting are ineligible to vote today but will be able to cast their ballots on December 7 during the main elections.
Tallying and Security Measures
Ballots cast during the Special Voting exercise will not be counted immediately. Instead, they will remain sealed and securely stored at police stations in each constituency until December 7. On election day, these ballots will be tallied at Constituency Collation Centres and recorded separately on Presidential and Parliamentary Election Results Collation Forms before merging with the main election results.
The EC has issued clear instructions to Presiding Officers to avoid counting Special Voting ballots today, emphasizing that all ballots remain under tight security until the official counting date.
Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, Inspector-General of Police and chair of the National Elections Security Taskforce, has assured Ghanaians that comprehensive security measures are in place to maintain order and ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
