A founding member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has expressed deep concerns about the current operations of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), warning that its actions may jeopardize the nation’s democratic integrity.

Speaking at an anti-corruption forum held at the GNAT Hall in Accra on Monday, September 2, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe voiced his apprehensions, stating, “At this moment, the greatest threat to our democracy is the Electoral Commission. If we are not vigilant, they could lead this country to ruin—mark my words.”

He emphasized the potential danger posed by the EC’s conduct, noting that it could destabilize the nation. Drawing on his past experiences, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe underscored the seriousness of his warning: “I have witnessed coups in this country and have even been involved in them. I know what I am talking about, having spent almost five years in prison.”

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe’s concerns are rooted in recent actions by the EC, which he believes have been mishandled. He highlighted specific instances of what he described as unauthorized transfers of voters between constituencies. According to him, these transfers were carried out without the necessary approvals and could have far-reaching consequences for the electoral process.

“How can transfers occur from one constituency to another without proper consent? These are not baseless claims,” he remarked.

His comments come at a time when the EC is facing increased scrutiny from various stakeholders, including the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), as the country gears up for the 2024 general elections.
