Don’t Repeat Akufo-Addo’s Mistakes By Sacking Dampare – Kofi Bentil Appeals To President Mahama

The appeal comes amid reports suggesting that the current administration is considering replacing the IGP. Taking to his Facebook page, Bentil drew parallels between the potential removal of Dr. Dampare and the controversial dismissal of former Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo by President Nana Akufo-Addo. He warned against repeating such actions, which he labeled as unjust and counterproductive.

Kofi Bentil, Vice President of IMANI Africa, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to avoid repeating what he describes as the missteps of the previous NPP administration by retaining Dr. George Akuffo Dampare as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP). Bentil emphasized that Dr. Dampare has demonstrated exceptional diligence and professionalism in his role and deserves to continue serving under the new government.

“We must avoid becoming what we once criticized. Domelevo was removed for simply doing his job, and the Supreme Court later ruled that action as wrongful. What has the IGP done except excel in his duties? I hope the NDC will not replicate the mistakes of the NPP,” Bentil wrote.

He further highlighted that IMANI Africa has taken the matter of dismissing security chiefs to the Supreme Court, with a ruling expected on May 7, 2025. The case seeks to determine whether security heads, including the IGP, can be removed without just cause. Bentil urged the government to uphold the rule of law and await the Court’s decision before taking any action.

“This IGP has performed exceptionally well and should be retained for the benefit of all. Even if President Mahama intends to follow the path of the NPP, he should at least demonstrate respect for the rule of law by waiting for the Supreme Court’s ruling. We hope Ghana will witness the promised reset rather than a repetition of past mistakes in a more severe form,” Bentil added.

Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, who has served as IGP since 2021, is a seasoned police officer with five years remaining before his retirement. His tenure has been widely praised for its professionalism and commitment to maintaining law and order. Bentil’s appeal underscores the importance of stability and continuity in leadership, particularly within critical institutions like the police service.

As the nation awaits the Supreme Court’s decision, the call for restraint and adherence to legal processes remains a central theme in the discourse surrounding the IGP’s tenure.
