An Accra Circuit Court has discharged some 60 persons alleged to be Western Togolanders who were arrested in connection with violent attacks in the Volta region.
Suspected to be members of the Homeland Study Group Foundation, the accused persons had charges against them dropped by the state with no reasons given.
Sylvester Mensah, State Prosecutor prayed the Court to grant the State’s application for withdrawal of charges and to discharge the 60 accused persons.
Suspected members of the Western Togoland secessionists raided parts of the Volta region including police stations and the STC, looting police armoury and burning buses.
Security personnel in their bid to restore order arrested some persons believed to be involved in the hooliganism.
However, the Homeland Study Group Foundation, the frontliners for the freedom of Western Togoland, have denied having a hand in the violence, stressing they always resort to dialogue with government.
