COP Rtd. Kofi Boakye To Replace Prof. Naana Jane As Running Mate To John Mahama?

Nathan Kofi Boakye, the former Commissioner of Police (COP), is gaining prominence as a potential candidate for the Vice Presidential position within the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The retired high-ranking police chief’s name is reportedly being seriously considered by stakeholders and advisors of the former President.

Kofi Boakye, a lawyer by training, originates from the Ashanti Region, which the NDC is reportedly exploring as a potential source for a running mate if Mahama decides to replace Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang.

Several members within the party have been proposing that the retired police officer might be a more suitable choice for Mahama’s requirements compared to the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast.

For many years, there have been rumors about Nathan Kofi Boakye’s supposed affiliation with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and reports suggest that he could have been appointed Inspector General of Police if the NDC were in power before his retirement.

During his tenure as the Director of Legal and Prosecution in the Ghana Police Service, he was seen at the wedding of Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the opposition NDC, alongside John Mahama and other prominent NDC figures.

Despite his alleged connections, Kofi Boakye left the police service with an excellent reputation for professionalism and bravery, earning numerous awards for his dedicated service to the police and Ghana as a whole. Many believe that selecting him as a running mate could provide the necessary boost for Mahama’s presidential aspirations.

Some individuals hold the belief that if a former police officer like Kofi Boakye becomes the Vice President on the NDC ticket, the police force might exhibit greater professionalism and assertiveness in countering the alleged rigging scheme by the NPP in the 2024 election. This stems from the idea that having someone from within their ranks in a position of power could lead to a more resolute stance against potential electoral misconduct.

Supporters of Kofi Boakye argue that as Vice President, he would be responsible for overseeing the Police and other security councils of the country, making him exceptionally well-suited for the position. Alongside other potential candidates like Alex Kofi Mensah Mould, Kwame Awuah Darko, Julius Debrah, Sylvester Mensah, and Dr. Valerie Sawyerr, Kofi Boakye is being considered as a potential partner for John Mahama in the 2024 election.
