Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is in full support of the controversial Electronic Transaction Levy despite his palpable silence on conversations around it, General Secretary of the ruling party has said.

According to John Boadu, the Vice President has not spoken about it because he is not expected to comment on everything.

“I can tell you for a fact that he is in full support of E-levy. He supports it fully,” Mr Boadu told Nana Aba Anamoah on Starr Chat on Wednesday.

When the host asked why Dr Bawumai has been quiet on controversies surrounding the proposed levy, Mr Boadu retorted: “he can’t comment on everything, he is not expected to speak on everything but I will tell him you (Nana Aba) want to hear him on E-levy”.

Electronic Transaction Levy (commonly known as Electronic Levy or E-levy) is a tax applied on transactions made on electronic or digital platforms.

It is proposed the E-levy would cover the following transactions: All inward remittances (which would be paid by the recipient), All person-to-person (P2P) mobile transactions (which includes sending of funds to another account, payment for goods and services, payment of utilities, All POS/Merchant payments.

Meanwhile, the Roads and Highways Minister, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, has disclosed that the government will use the Levy if passed to secure loans for road infrastructure in the country.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament last Friday, the Minister for first time gave indication that the E-Levy will be securitized for loans to address challenges in the roads sector.

“The government in its wisdom has proposed the passage of the E-levy to bring more revenue to build the road infrastructure of our country for all of us. So the government is looking forward for the passage of the E-levy that will bring in greater revenue that would be securitized and then used to raise bond if possible to build the road infrastructure,” he said.
