As the race for power intensifies in the aftermath of the 2024 general elections, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is generating waves through a series of media engagements. During a recent appearance on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo, the NPP’s National Women’s Organizer, Kate Gyamfua, provided intriguing insights into the party’s flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Bawumia.
Addressing listeners, Gyamfua delved into the persona of Dr. Bawumia, emphasizing his unique ability to garner support independently of the presidency. Contrary to popular perceptions, Gyamfua asserted, “People have the perception that Bawumia was voted for during the flagbearer elections because of President Akufo-Addo’s backing. I want to state that anyone asserting such is a liar because the only support I can confirm from the presidency for Bawumia’s victory is 15%.”
The NPP’s National Women’s Organizer went further to shed light on instances where Vice President Bawumia demonstrated autonomy in decision-making. Gyamfua highlighted Bawumia’s opposition to the controversial E-levy, stating, “If any NPP member wants to challenge this, they should come forward. Bawumia and Ursula Owusu fought against the E-levy during a meeting, stating that it was not important, so they should look elsewhere. It is true that it has added no value to our economy.”
Gyamfua continued with revelations about Bawumia’s stand against seeking financial aid from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), advocating for internal mobilization of funds. She claimed, “‘We even clapped for him, but the President said he didn’t want things to get out of hand before running into the IMF.”
Challenging fellow party members to dispute these claims, Gyamfua asserted, “Let someone come and challenge it. This issue should not have been raised, but if they call me for a meeting too, I will reiterate and affirm that yes, I have said it. We are tired.”
The unfolding dynamics within the NPP present an intriguing layer to Ghana’s political landscape as the nation prepares for the 2024 general elections. Dr. Bawumia’s victory in the party’s flagbearer race positions him as a formidable contender against prominent opponents, including the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, and Alan Kyerematen. As the political stage heats up, all eyes are on the unfolding narratives within the NPP, with Gyamfua’s revelations adding a new dimension to the political discourse.
