President Akufo-Addo has only resurrected his desire to fight the galamsey menace because the European Union threatened to ban Ghana’s cocoa, Akwai Addai Odike, leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP) has claimed.
According to him, the President had always lacked the commitment to fight the menace, albeit putting his presidency on the line.
Mr Odike further disclosed his suspicion that the President may have a galamsey rep who supplies him gold at the Flagstaff house, a reason he has failed to tackle the menace head on.
“I am beginning to suspect that the president has a galamsey rep who brings him gold to the Flagstaff house,” Odike said on Accra-based Happy FM’s late afternoon talk show on Wednesday, April 28, 2021.
“Let me tell you, Akufo-Addo is not serious to fight galamsey, he has an interest in it. It is the European Union threat to ban our cocoa that has triggered his recent reaction which is in itself wrong – i.e. to deploy soldiers against civilians, it is wrong,” he said.
