President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed pride in his administration’s performance, maintaining that posterity will judge his government favorably despite criticism following the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the 2024 general elections.
Speaking at the launch of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s (PCG) Bicentennial Anniversary in Accra on Sunday, the President highlighted his administration’s achievements across various sectors.
“I speak to you proud of the achievements my government has chalked under God’s guidance and the support of our people,” President Akufo-Addo said. He pointed to transformative policies in education, health, industry, infrastructure, agriculture, and governance as key milestones.
“In all humility, I am confident that posterity will judge well the Akufo-Addo government’s performance,” he added. “Future generations will look back on this era and say that we laid a strong foundation for progress and prosperity.”
Facing Criticism After Electoral Defeat
The President’s remarks come at a time when some political analysts and critics blame his administration for the NPP’s electoral defeat. They argue that governance challenges during his tenure, including economic difficulties and perceived policy missteps, contributed to the party’s loss.
Acknowledging the Church’s Role
During the event, President Akufo-Addo expressed gratitude to the Presbyterian Church of Ghana for its unwavering support throughout his tenure.
“The impact of the gospel is not only seen in schools and hospitals but also in the moral fibre of our people,” he said. “As President, I have often drawn strength and wisdom from the word of God.”
He praised the Church for its steadfast partnership, noting its role in praying for him and encouraging his government’s vision of national transformation.
“Your prayers have sustained me, and your faith has inspired me to persevere even in the most challenging times,” he said.
The Presbyterian Church of Ghana, which celebrates 200 years of ministry, has played a prominent role in Ghana’s socio-economic development, particularly in education and healthcare.
As the nation reflects on the legacy of the Akufo-Addo administration, debate over its impact is likely to persist. However, the President remains optimistic about his contributions to Ghana’s development and the judgment of history.
