Former U.S. President Donald Trump is unharmed after gunshots were reported “in his vicinity” on Sunday, according to a statement from his campaign. Campaign communications director Steven Cheung assured the public that “President Trump is safe,” but provided no additional details regarding the situation.

The U.S. Secret Service later confirmed on X (formerly known as Twitter) that they were investigating a “protective incident” involving Trump, which occurred just before 2:00 PM EST (7:00 PM BST). The Secret Service is continuing its investigation, though further details remain limited. The BBC has reached out to both the Secret Service and the Trump campaign for additional information.

This latest incident follows an attempted assassination of Trump nearly two months ago during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where the former president was grazed by a bullet on his ear.

Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., shared more details in a post on X, stating that shots were fired at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, where Trump was reportedly playing golf. He also noted that a suspect had been apprehended.

The West Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office is involved in the ongoing investigation, though specifics about the shooter or motive have yet to be revealed.

The White House confirmed that both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have been briefed on the incident. In a statement, the White House expressed relief that Trump was safe and assured the public that the president and vice president would continue to receive updates on the situation.
