A member of the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) has said that where as the governing New Patriotic Party NPP) has spent over ¢800m on the nation builder’s Corps(NABCO), the NDC has used only used ¢50m to support Ghanaian entrepreneurs.
Giving her expectation on the 2022 budget statement, she said the only expectation is taxes and hardships on Ghanaians since government is broke and heavily indebted.
This country is left with nothing after the current NPP government has borrowed more than any government since the Nkrumah era. She narrated that before the Akuffo Addo led NPP came to power, Ghana’s accumulated debt from first republic was ¢122b. But five years after Akuffo Addo became president, the debt ballooned to a staggering ¢231b.
Speaking on the “Good morning Africa” show on pan African TV today, she said the NDC used the ¢50m to support Ghanaian enterpreneurs in the pharmaceutical industry while a ban was also placed on the importation of some drugs to allow local entrepreneurs to grow. A strategy that could be employed by the NPP to reduce unemployment.
“Under the NDC, we expanded the Tema Port, supported businesses under the pharmaceutical industry with only ¢50m. We also made sure we reduced the importation of some foreign pharmaceutical products in an attempt to reduce the competition on the local businesses. But the NPP wasted over ¢800m on NABCO alone. This money could be used to create a lot of jobs under the private sector.”
She also mentioned that the NPP government doesn’t not know the tactics to put in place to generate revenue for Ghana. “The money borrowed by this government could be appropriated to generate more money for the nation. They call themselves capitalists but you don’t support the private sector to grow.”
