Your SADA Initiative Couldn’t Even Build A Public Toilet And All Your Guinea Fowls Flew To Burkina – Bawumia Taunts NDC
Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has criticized the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for failing to deliver meaningful development to the northern part of Ghana through the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA). During a campaign stop in Binduri in the Upper East Region, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the shortcomings of the SADA program, which aimed to accelerate development in the north.
Dr. Bawumia pointed out that SADA did not even manage to provide basic infrastructure such as toilet facilities for the northern communities. “Not even a toilet was built under that project—the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority project,” he stated.
He also mentioned the well-publicized but unsuccessful initiatives under SADA, such as the rearing of guinea fowls, which he claimed failed because the birds allegedly flew to Burkina Faso. The Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) was established as an independent agency to coordinate a comprehensive development agenda for the northern savannah ecological zone in Ghana, which included the Upper East, Upper West, and Northern Regions, as well as contiguous districts.
The main objective of SADA was to promote sustainable development and address the effects of climate change, such as floods and droughts, by fostering a forested and green north to catalyze climate change reversal and improve the livelihoods of the most vulnerable citizens in the area.
Unfortunately, the program was marred by corruption, which hindered its ability to fulfill its mandate. In response, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government replaced SADA with the Northern Development Authority (NDA) in 2017.
