Following former Supreme Court Justice William Atuguba’s critique of recent judicial appointments and the Electoral Commission’s (EC) actions, Independent parliamentary aspirant for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has hit back, accusing the retired judge of hypocrisy.
In a sharp Facebook post, A Plus questioned Justice Atuguba’s moral authority to criticize the current state of the judiciary and electoral system, sarcastically suggesting that the former judge is now more vocal after retiring from the bench. “This country ɛh!! Today you know how to criticise. Your apampam like Papa Ajasco!” A Plus wrote, comparing Justice Atuguba’s sudden outspokenness to the popular character from the Nigerian comedy series Papa Ajasco, known for his distinctive, humorous appearance.
A Plus’s comments allude to a perceived inconsistency in Justice Atuguba’s public statements. While Atuguba’s recent criticisms have garnered significant attention, A Plus suggested that the former judge may have been silent on similar issues during his tenure on the bench. The independent candidate, known for his candid opinions on political and social matters, implied that Atuguba’s current stance comes too late and questioned whether the former judge acted in the public’s best interest when he held a position of authority.
This online exchange has added fuel to the ongoing public debate surrounding the integrity of Ghana’s judiciary and electoral processes. While Atuguba’s comments have been seen by many as a bold critique of the misuse of power, A Plus’s retort taps into a broader sentiment of frustration over what some perceive as selective criticism from those who held influential positions in the past.
As the conversation heats up, A Plus’s remarks reflect a growing discourse on the accountability of public officials, even after retirement. His post has sparked a lively response on social media, with some users siding with the outspoken activist, while others defend Justice Atuguba’s right to voice his concerns, regardless of his past role in the judiciary.
