Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has issued a strong warning that Ghanaians will not tolerate any attempt by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to cling to power if they lose the 2024 general elections. Speaking on Monday, September 18, Mahama stated that any refusal to hand over power peacefully would provoke the anger of the people.
“Let us win this election, and if a nincompoop says he will not hand over power, that is when you will see the wrath of Ghanaians,” Mahama asserted, making it clear that citizens will react forcefully if the NPP attempts to resist the results.
Mahama’s remarks were in response to growing concerns over comments made by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who has expressed a desire to see his party continue in power, aiming to hand over the presidency to the NPP’s 2024 candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Mahama described this ambition as an “empty boast.”
On the same issue, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin also addressed President Akufo-Addo, emphasizing that he has no choice but to transfer power to the duly elected president come January 2025. In a recent interview, Bagbin stated that the upcoming 2024 election is pivotal, not just for political parties but for the future of Ghana’s democratic system. He underscored that any talk of holding on to power after losing is unconstitutional and would not be accepted.
Bagbin expressed his shock at the notion of the NPP retaining power if defeated, saying, “The power President Akufo-Addo holds belongs to the people, and it will be their decision who leads the country after December 7.”
President Akufo-Addo, during a recent rally in Doboro, Greater Accra, reaffirmed his stance that he does not believe in John Mahama’s ability to lead the country effectively. He urged voters to support his vice president, Dr. Bawumia, in the upcoming election, stating, “I cannot hand over to someone I defeated twice. He will undo the progress we have made.”
