You Can’t Stop Me From Mining Even If You Win – Wontumi Dares Mahama

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and owner of Akonta Mining, has issued a stern warning to former President John Dramani Mahama. This follows Mahama’s recent commitment to implement stricter regulations and amend laws to tackle illegal mining, including activities by Akonta Mining in forest reserves, should he win the 2024 presidential election.

Chairman Wontumi, a prominent figure in the mining industry, expressed deep dissatisfaction with Mahama’s statements, interpreting them as an attempt to target him and others perceived as political adversaries. He suggested that Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), aims to use political power for personal vendettas.

Wontumi further argued that the distinction between illegal and legal mining lies primarily in the documentation process, an area in which he claims to have consistently adhered to legal standards. “What’s the difference between illegal and legal mining? The difference is a document,” he remarked, asserting his expertise in securing the necessary permits and documentation to operate within legal bounds.

In his response, Wontumi questioned Mahama’s ability to interfere with his mining operations, citing his extensive experience and established presence in the mining sector. He emphasized his legal rights to continue his activities, dismissing any potential threats posed by Mahama’s proposed policies.

Additionally, Wontumi accused Mahama of harboring ill will towards the Ashanti Region, suggesting that the former president’s policies are crafted to undermine the economic interests of the region. “You want to win to avenge your enemies… anything concerning Ashanti, you don’t like it,” he added, implying that Mahama’s intentions are driven by personal grievances rather than genuine concern for the country’s well-being.
