The King and Overlord of Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii-kunuto Jewu Soale I, has expressed satisfaction with the resolution of issues involving the Damongo paramountcy and Samuel A. Jinapor, the Member of Parliament for Damongo Constituency and Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.
This development followed a visit by Mr. Jinapor, accompanied by government officials, to the Yagbonwura on August 1, 2024, to present his side of the story.
President Nana Akufo-Addo then dispatched a delegation led by the Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, to meet with the Yagbonwura. The delegation included the Minister for Defence, Hon. Dominic Nitiwul, the Savannah Region’s representative on the Council of State, Pkogriwura Adam Zakaria, the Savannah Regional Minister, Saeed Muhazu Jibril, and the Savannah Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Alhaji Iddrisu Sulemana.
During the meeting, Mr. Jinapor explained his side of the story, reaffirming his respect for the chieftaincy institution and the Yagbonwura. The Yagbonwura, after listening to the Minister, expressed satisfaction with his explanation. He acknowledged the Minister’s respect for the chieftaincy institution and the customs and traditions of Gonja.
The Yagbonwura appreciated Mr. Jinapor’s humility and commitment to resolving the issues, blessing him as his proud grandson and welcoming him to the Jakpa Palace and other palaces in Gonja.
Meanwhile, supporters of one of the claimants to the Damongo skin have urged the Savannah Regional House of Chiefs to deliver its judgment on the Damongo chieftaincy dispute, which has been pending since 2016. The group emphasized the need for a final judgment to prevent recurrent clashes between the disputing parties and their supporters.
