Senior political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Prof Ransford Gyampo has warned on the dangers that could soon be associated with the precedent of making wives succeed their deceased husbands as Members of Parliament.
According to him, it is a dangerous practice that the country must shy away from because some wives with marital issues may soon take advantage of the situation and murder their husbands in order to succeed them as MPs.
He further noted that it undermines quality representation, particularly, if the only driving force to push a certain segment of the citizenry to parliament is the loss of their spouse”.
“We must also be careful not to perpetuate this precedent. Else, very soon, some unscrupulous people who have marital issues with their spouse may be plotting murder as a means of getting selected to parliament,” he stated.
