Jean Mensa, the Chair of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), has announced that the commission will not uphold the declaration of parliamentary results in nine constituencies, citing that they were made under duress.
The affected constituencies include Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Ahafo Ano South West, Ahafo Ano North, Obuasi East, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, Tema Central, Techiman South, and Dome-Kwabenya.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Thursday, December 19, Madam Mensa described the declarations made by EC officials in these areas as “illegal” due to threats and coercion.
“The declarations made by our staff were under threats, and we consider them illegal. We will not uphold results made under threats or duress,” she stated.
Assurance of Due Process
Madam Mensa assured the public that the commission is committed to ensuring due process in resolving the issue. The outstanding collations in the affected constituencies, she noted, will be completed in a lawful and transparent manner.
Call for Security for EC Officials
The EC Chair also called on outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and incoming President John Dramani Mahama to ensure the safety of Electoral Commission officials during the post-election processes.
“We appeal to Akufo-Addo and John Mahama to intervene and provide the commission with adequate security to fully complete our work in the 2024 general elections,” she added.
Implications
The nullification of results in these constituencies has raised concerns about the integrity of the 2024 general elections. Political analysts warn that the EC’s decision could heighten tensions in an already polarized political environment.
Both the ruling and opposition parties have yet to issue official statements regarding the EC’s announcement. Meanwhile, citizens and stakeholders continue to call for calm as the situation unfolds.
