We’ll Hold Jean Mensa Responsible If Anything Happens To Ghana’s Democracy – Haruna Iddrisu

The Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has expressed serious concerns over the Electoral Commission’s (EC) failure to audit Ghana’s voter register, warning that this poses a significant threat to the country’s democratic process. In a recent appearance on Hot Issues on TV3, the former Minority Leader stated that if Ghana’s democracy falters, the responsibility will fall squarely on the EC Chair, Jean Mensa.

“We will hold Jean Mensa solely responsible should anything happen to Ghana’s democracy,” Haruna Iddrisu declared, cautioning the EC Chair against actions that could destabilize the country. He further urged her not to adopt a “holier-than-thou” attitude and reminded the Commission that its relevance lies in serving the citizens.

The remarks follow the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s nationwide demonstration on Tuesday, September 17, under the theme “Enough is Enough.” The protest was aimed at demanding an audit of the voter register to ensure a credible and transparent electoral process. The NDC’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, emphasized the party’s call for free, fair, and transparent elections, underscoring that a credible voter register is central to this goal.

“We want nothing but transparent elections that will guarantee our right to choose our leaders,” Asiedu Nketia said. He warned that without ensuring citizens’ right to self-determination, Ghana’s democracy could be at serious risk.

Haruna Iddrisu echoed this sentiment, stressing that Ghana’s democracy is in jeopardy. However, he remained hopeful, stating that every democracy faces challenges but has the ability to overcome threats. “Our ability to fight that tyrant and restore democracy once again is paramount and we shall prevail,” he said.

The calls for an audit of the voter register come ahead of future elections, as the NDC and its supporters push for reforms that they believe are necessary to protect the integrity of Ghana’s democratic system.
