The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed contentment with securing the eighth position on the ballot for the 2024 presidential election, viewing it as a symbol of change after what they describe as eight years of poor governance under the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, September 20, following the balloting process, NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey highlighted the significance of the party’s position on the ballot. He said that the number eight symbolises a critical turning point for the nation, after years of what the NDC perceives as mismanagement, corruption, and disorder under the NPP. “We sought God’s guidance in this process and we accept the number eight. After eight years of decay and corruption, it’s clear that this is the moment to bring an end to the current challenges,” Mr. Kwetey stated.
He further expressed satisfaction with the transparency of the process, contrasting the NDC’s adherence to the rules with what he described as the NPP’s disregard for the initial balloting agreement. “The public witnessed how the NPP chose to ignore the agreed process. This reflects the broader contrast between those seeking to do what is right for Ghana and those acting otherwise,” Mr. Kwetey added.
The NPP secured the number one position on the ballot, while the NDC will campaign from the number eight spot. The final ballot positions were determined during a draw conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC) in Accra.
