‘We Respect The Decision of The Supreme Court’ – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) in a statement has said it respects the decision of the Supreme Court in the ruling of the new voters’ register compilation for the December 7 polls.

The EC had its decision to compile a new register challenged at the Supreme Court by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and one Mark Tekyi-Benson. They prayed the court to direct the EC to accept the old voters’ register and birth certificates as proof of citizenship in the registration exercise.

However, a ruling by the court on Thursday June 25, 2020 rejected the relief.

In a statement issued few hours after the court decision, the EC said, “as a Commission which believes in the sanctity of the law, we respect the decision of the Supreme Court.”

The statement said the EC is particularly being guided by the Court’s statement that, “the Electoral Commission in exercising their discretion in the discharge of their constitutional mandate in cleaning the Voters Register should be deemed as authorized to be acting within the law and the regulations therein, and cannot be faulted even if it is considered that there is a more efficient mode or method available”.

The registration is set to start on June 30 to August 6 according to the EC. It urged all stakeholders to brace themselves up for it.

“The commission entreats all its stakeholders to hold themselves in readiness for the voters registration exercise,” it read.
