Prof Ransford Gyampo, political science lecturer at the University of Ghana has questioned the reasoning behind the President’s decision to pay salaries to First and Second ladies.
In an article, Prof Gyampo said the decision is not backed by law and “would also open the floodgates to deepen more nepotistic appointments to the offices of the First and Second Ladies in a manner that may not augur well for the fight against corruption”.
To him, the President and his Vice are paid so well that they should be able to adequately cater for their wives without putting them on government payroll.
His comment comes on the back of recent news that the Article 71 Emoluments Committee has recommended the payment of cabinet minister-level salaries to the presidential spouses.
Information Minister, Oppong Nkrumah says it has already received parliamentary approval.
Meanwhile some NDC MPs have vowed to go to court with the matter.
