The Electoral Commission (EC) has declared the parliamentary primary held in the Walewale Constituency by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) null and void.
This decision comes after the EC’s Regional Director revealed that a significant portion of the ballot papers had been damaged, making it impossible to identify whether votes were cast for candidate A or B.
The primary, held to determine the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for the 2024 elections, featured Mahama Tia Kabiru and Hajia Lariba Zuweira Abudu as the main contenders. However, tensions between their supporters have been rising, culminating in a clash on September 7 outside Eagle FM, a local radio station in Walewale.
The division within the constituency has deepened, with some constituency executives openly backing their preferred candidates, further exacerbating the tension. The EC’s decision adds another layer of uncertainty to the already volatile political atmosphere in the Walewale Constituency.
