Volta Military Influx: Don’t Be Misled By the NDC – Gov’t to Nat’l House of Chiefs

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has urged the National House of Chiefs to ignore the opposition New Democratic Congress (NDC) and not allow itself to be deceived by their political propaganda.

This comes after the president of the House of Chiefs Togbe Afede XIV, chided the government for deploying military personnel to the Volta region to intimidate residents ahead of the December polls.

Speaking during a tour by former president John Mahama, Togbe Afede XIV said, “never before have we seen this kind of invasion of our homes. We have already enough problems in our country, problems in the Volta region.

However, Deputy Information Minister Pius Enam Hadzide in reaction said the country has grown beyond tribal politics.

According to him the deployment of the military to the Volta region cannot be termed as an invasion. He opined that the chief’s statement could be borne out of a lack of understanding or plain ignorance, terming it as an ‘unfortunate characterization.

“I think that what is happening is the politicization of the security operation which is in our own interest. That this invitation to discuss this matter in an ethnic and tribal and regional manner is not worthy, it is actually uncalled for and unwarranted,” he said.

Pius added, “and so you cannot interpret this to mean that…. It’s an invasion, introducing tribal bigotry and ethnic sentiments. Our chiefs must be minded not to fall into the temptation and the trap that is being set by the NDC. We have moved beyond that politics, and the people of the region now want to focus on development and policies that matter to their well being.”
