Black Stars winger Christian Atsu‘s wife Marie-Claire Rupio has come out for the first time about her husband’s disappearance in the wake of the deadly earthquake that struck Turkey.

According to Marie-Claire Rupio in an interview with the BBC, the news that the footballer was trapped in a collapsed building after the earthquake shattered the family.

She referred to the conflicting information regarding the circumstance as confused and pleaded with the governments of the UK and Turkey to take all necessary steps to save him.

“He is still trapped under the rubble but the problem is they don’t have the necessary equipment needed to get them out. So he is still missing and they don’t know where he is,” she told BBC in an interview.

In the early hours of Monday, a strong earthquake slammed south-eastern Turkey, close to the Syrian border, killing more than 5,000 people while they slept and trapping many more.

According to the US Geological Survey, the 7.8 magnitude earthquake occurred in the city of Gaziantep at 04:17 local time (01:17 GMT) with a depth of 17.9 kilometers (11 miles).

A second earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 struck the Elbistan district of the Kahramanmaras province hours later.

The 31-year-old Black Stars winger signed a one-year contract to play for the Turkish team in September 2022 after spending time in Saudi Arabia.

According to reports, the earthquake in Turkey and Syria claimed more than 22,000 lives.
