Use Of Presidential Jet By Other Heads Of State In National Interest – Shirley Ayorkor To Parliament

Ms Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, told Parliament that the decision to give Ghana’s presidential jet to heads of state from neighboring nations was in the country’s best interests.

The clearances were based on the urgency of the situation in West Africa, Ghana’s leadership of ECOWAS, and the necessity of guaranteeing the effective participation of West African leaders in crucial meetings for brokering peace in the sub-region, she said.

Ms Botchwey, speaking on the floor of Parliament yesterday, said that such peacemaking was necessary to allow Ghanaians and other citizens to live in a safe and secure environment.

Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) asked the minister this question in response to a question from Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa of the NDC, who wanted to know the foreign policy considerations for approving requests from other presidents to use Ghana’s presidential jet, the total number of approvals since 2017 to date, and the financial implications to the Ghanaian taxpayer.

“As Chair of the ECOWAS Authority, Ghana has had to put in extra effort and resources to lead the way in finding long-term solutions to the issue in our ECOWAS sub-region,” she remarked.

In the aftermath of the recent Guinea political crisis, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, in his capacity as the ECOWAS Chair, not only held an emergency meeting of his colleague Heads of State, but also arranged the passage of some Heads of State to and from Accra.
