Dennis Miracles Aboagye, spokesperson for the Bawumia Campaign Team, has asserted that former President John Dramani Mahama was not responsible for the construction of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC). Aboagye made these comments during the Next Chapter series of the Bawumia campaign on Sunday, June 16, 2024, clarifying the roles of former Presidents John Evans Atta-Mills and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the establishment of the medical facility.

Addressing the public, Aboagye stated, “President Mahama never built the University of Ghana Medical Centre. He had no hand in the construction of the University of Ghana Medical Centre. Two presidents rather constructed the edifice.”

Aboagye elaborated that former President Mills initiated the project, completing approximately 70% of phase one before his demise. He noted that although former President Mahama continued the project, he did not complete it. It was President Akufo-Addo, Aboagye emphasized, who finished phase one and subsequently commissioned the facility.

“President Akufo-Addo came and went to Parliament for approval of the loan to construct phase two of the University of Ghana Medical Centre. The loan facility for phase two forms part of the loans Akufo-Addo is always accused by the NDC that he has accumulated,” Miracles explained.

He further clarified that the construction of phase two was undertaken entirely by the Akufo-Addo administration, from securing the loan to completing the project. “Phase two of the University of Ghana Medical Centre was started from scratch by the Akufo-Addo administration and completed by the same administration,” he reiterated, dismissing any claims of Mahama’s involvement.

Aboagye also questioned the logic behind the NDC’s reluctance to acknowledge the NPP’s efforts in completing the UGMC while simultaneously claiming credit for the construction of Terminal 3 at Kotoka International Airport. “The NDC built Terminal 3 which is beautiful. They built it on the existing Kotoka International Airport and that’s fine. But when we tell them we built phase two of UGMC, they say it is not a standalone facility so we cannot take credit for it. What sort of logic is this?” he quizzed.

These statements by Aboagye come amidst a broader debate on the contributions of various administrations to national infrastructure projects. The Bawumia Campaign Team seeks to set the record straight on the origins and completion of the UGMC, attributing its development to the collaborative efforts of Presidents Mills and Akufo-Addo, while firmly excluding former President Mahama from this narrative.
