UGMC Sued By Family Over Death Of Relative

The Akatis family have sued the University of Ghana Medical Center(UGMC) at the high court for the health record of their deceased relative before he could be buried.

The family said, until they know the cause of death of their deceased relative by name Franklin Battanis Akati, they would hold on with the burial.

Reports indicated that, Francis was admitted at the hospital on the 28th of June and unfortunately died a day after but interestingly the family only got to hear about his death on the 30th of June.

Also, the corpse of the deceased had been conveyed to the Ga Municipal Hospital to be buried without any prior notice.

The worried family said in its writ to the court that, “the UGMC has, since the demise of the deceased, failed to inform the deceased’s family of any diagnosis, prescriptions or recommendations prior to his death.”

“Upon further enquiry by the members of the deceased’s family, the Ga East Municipal was making preparations to bury the deceased’s corpse without the knowledge of any member of the deceased’s family,” it added.

A letter had also been written to the Medical Director of the hospital to that effect insisting that “autopsy is a requirement for the establishment of the cause of death of a person who dies within 24 hours upon arrival in a medical facility for treatment.”

The family therefore prayed the court “to make an order of mandamus” forcing the hospital to make available the health records of their deceased relative.
