The Lies Which Made Me Lose My Position As NDC Chairman Still Pains Me Today – Ofosu Ampofo

Dr. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, former National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), continues to grapple with his defeat nearly ten months after losing his position to Johnson Asiedu Nketia in the party’s leadership race. In December last year, Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo was decisively unseated by then-General Secretary Asiedu Nketia, who garnered 65.17% of the votes, while Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo received 33.81%.

Despite the margin of the loss, Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo has expressed ongoing distress over the events that surrounded the contest, particularly the speculations and allegations that emerged during the campaign. Reflecting on his experience, he noted the damaging nature of some narratives, particularly those questioning his loyalty and affiliations within the party. One such claim, which he finds deeply troubling, suggested that he was aligned with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) due to his Akyem heritage. Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo expressed disbelief that such claims could gain traction, especially given his long-standing service to the NDC.

Highlighting the unprecedented nature of the campaign, he pointed out that the level of acrimony and internal strife during this contest was unlike anything he had witnessed since the party’s formation in 1992. The campaign was marked by press conferences, accusations, and insults, a situation Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo described as damaging and uncharacteristic of the NDC’s internal elections. He stressed the need for reforms to ensure that future internal campaigns remain free of needless propaganda and hostility.

As the NDC gears up for future contests, Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo’s reflections serve as a call for introspection within the party, emphasizing the importance of unity and a healthier internal political culture.
