TEWU Begins Strike Today Over Unpaid Professional Development Allowance

The Teachers’ and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) will go on strike today, Wednesday, January 5, 2022, to demand better working conditions.

The government, according to the union, has neglected to pay professional development allowances owing to them since 2020.

The union’s General Secretary, Mark Dankyira Korankye, said the government must take proper steps to address their concerns as soon as possible.

He was adamant that this was the only way they could get back to work.

“The government must immediately end its open discrimination against the TEWU and give its members their allowance for continuing professional growth.”

Mr. Mark Dankyira Korankye further stated that the strike affects all of the organization’s members and that they must all follow the directive.

“Until an equitable resolution to this situation is reached, all of our members in the schools, district, and regional offices will withdraw their services.”

The last strike threat issued by the organisation was in May 2021. That threat was made in response to terrible working conditions.

The union’s latest strike was on January 13, 2022, but it was called off on January 18 by the union’s national leadership.

The TEWU claimed at the time that postponing the strike would allow for open and honest negotiations with the administration.

Since June 2019, TEWU has been in discussions with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission about a reassessment of the conditions of service for unionized public university employees.
