Tension In Parliament As NPP Supporters Mass Up Ahead Of Crucial Sitting

Published

on

The situation unfolding in Parliament today, with members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) amassing on the premises, is creating tension as Parliament prepares to sit following a significant ruling by Speaker Alban Bagbin.

The Speaker had declared four parliamentary seats vacant due to three MPs filing to contest as independent candidates in the 2024 elections. However, the Supreme Court has issued a stay of execution, effectively halting the Speaker’s ruling for the time being.

The appearance of NPP members, clad in their party shirts and paraphernalia, raises questions about their intentions. While some NPP supporters have stated that they are present to protect their Members of Parliament, the gathering is unusual, especially considering the legal complexity surrounding the vacant seats and the parliamentary balance of power.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), which insists it now holds the majority in Parliament following the Speaker’s declaration, has voiced concerns that the Supreme Court’s intervention represents an unlawful interference in parliamentary affairs. The NDC has been firm in its position to safeguard its majority status and is expected to make moves in Parliament aimed at easing economic burdens, such as repealing the E-Levy and other contentious taxes.

The standoff between the two major political parties, and the legal implications of the Supreme Court’s stay of execution, are creating a politically charged atmosphere, with the outcome of today’s parliamentary session eagerly awaited.
