The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has instructed the Minister of Roads and Transport, Kwasi Amoako Atta to suspend his directive for the abolition of road tolls or face contempt of parliament.
The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta, when he presented the 2022 budget in Parliament on 17th November 2021 proposed that government intends to abolish the collection of road tolls on all 35 road toll collection booths across the country.
According to the Finance Minister, this is to allow free flow of traffic and also allow government to focus on other areas of revenue mobilization.
Following the Finance Minister’s presentation, the Minister of Roads gave a directive instructing all toll collectors to cease operation immediately.
However, the Speaker of Parliament believes the Minister acted Ultra-Vires in the sense that collection of road tolls are backed by law and its suspension must be subject to parliamentary approval.
The Right Honorable Speaker, therefore, instructed the Minister to reverse his directive or face contempt of parliament.
