Speaker Of Parliament Cited For Contempt Over Anti-LGBTQI Bill

Dr. Amanda Odoi, a researcher, is calling upon the Supreme Court to take disciplinary action against Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament. This request stems from the allegation that Bagbin allowed the House to proceed with the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, despite ongoing legal actions related to the matter.

Dr. Odoi argues that the Speaker has consistently demonstrated a lack of respect and contempt towards both the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana and the judicial process.

The court documents state that the Speaker’s deliberate and ongoing disregard of the court process justifies the need for him to face sanctions for contempt, in order to safeguard the public interest and uphold the dignity of the Court.

Dr. Amanda Odoi, along with another citizen, has filed a lawsuit against the Speaker of Parliament and the Attorney General in relation to the anti-LGBTQ+ bill. According to her findings, the Speaker has been officially served with all the necessary court documents, including one that requests an injunction on Parliament’s consideration of the legislation.

Dr. Amanda Odoi argues that despite being aware of the ongoing lawsuit and the pending application for an interlocutory injunction, the Speaker proceeded with the Second Reading of the Bill in Parliament.

By doing so, she asserts that the Speaker has displayed a clear disregard and disrespect for the authority of the Court. This disregard, in her view, interferes with the outcome of the pending litigation, tarnishes the reputation of the judicial system, and undermines public confidence in it.

Consequently, Dr. Odoi believes that imposing sanctions on the Speaker would uphold the dignity of the court and maintain its integrity.
