The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to dazzle the electorate with a riveting new act as the Party’s flagbearer for the 2024 election, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is preparing to unveil his running mate in what promises to be a spectacle of strategic genius and backstage drama. The man of the hour? None other than Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, affectionately (or not) known as Napo.
As insiders whispered to this portal, the curtain will rise on Napo’s nomination after Dr. Bawumia completes his grand tour of the Ashanti Region. Think of it as a royal procession through a land that is a critical stronghold for the party, and a land where the man soon to be named running mate, enjoys massive love as a member of the Great Asante Royal Family. Following this tour, the party’s National Council will be treated to the climactic reveal, preceded by consultations with a lineup of key opinion leaders, including chiefs, queen mothers, and party elders. It is the sort of political choreography that could make or break the performance.
Napo, it seems, has amassed quite a fan club within the NPP. According to party research, he enjoys adoration in regions as diverse as Greater Accra, Ashanti, Eastern, Northern, and even the Volta Region—yes, even there. His appeal stretches to Bono and Ahafo, backed by fervent loyalty from the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
Kennedy Agyapong, that charismatic firebrand from Assin Central, has thrown his weight behind Napo, promising to go full-throttle in the campaign if his “man” gets the nod. Regional ministers across all 16 regions have also signaled their approval, indicating Napo’s wide appeal within the party’s ranks.
But alas, every protagonist has their naysayers. Critics within the party decry Napo as polarizing and domineering—qualities that, while excellent for a Shakespearean villain, might be less desirable in a running mate. His past statements on the nation’s power crisis (the infamous “dumsor”) and accusations of arrogance have some party insiders clutching their pearls. Furthermore, there are whispers that Napo harbors dreams of his own—presidential dreams, no less—which could lead to an epic showdown with Bawumia in the future.
Napo’s nomination shines a spotlight on the deeper drama within the NPP. His detractors, especially from his Ashanti homeland, fear his polarizing persona could spell trouble. Some even suspect a potential usurpation attempt in subsequent elections if the NPP doesn’t clinch victory in 2024.
Despite these shadowy mutterings, the Kumasi Traditional Council and the Manhyia Palace are practically dancing in the aisles at the prospect of Napo’s nomination. Their royal blessing carries weight, potentially swaying voters in the Ashanti Region. And this could very well become Napo’s biggest trump card.
The choice of Napo as running mate is nothing short of a masterstroke in political strategy. Internal consensus suggest that a strong performance in the Ashanti Region could be the NPP’s golden ticket to Jubilee House. With around 80% of the current NPP National Executives and over 90% of regional and constituency executives rallying behind Napo, his internal support is formidable.
Critics, however, caution that his appeal might not extend beyond the party faithful. Yet, his supporters argue that securing the party base is the first act in the grand play, with the quest for external votes to follow in the next act.
No political drama would be complete without a subplot of scandal. US-based vlogger Kevin Taylor, recently floated the name of Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson, Vice Chancellor of KNUST, as a possible running mate. This plot twist, insiders say, is merely a red herring to distract from Napo’s impending nomination. Taylor’s allegations of corruption against Napo have added a dash of intrigue, though the Ministry of Energy has dismissed these as mere theatrics.
As the NPP gears up for the 2024 election, the decision to cast Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate adds a dramatic twist to the unfolding political saga. With substantial internal backing and royal endorsements, Napo’s nomination promises to be a defining moment. Whether this will unite the party or deepen its divides remains to be seen. In the grand stage of Ghanaian politics, this decision will surely set the scene for an election campaign that could rival the best of political dramas.
